World Champion Chili King Born in Amarillo

Texas Chili King Frank X. Tolbert was born on July 27, 1912. He and Wick Fowler founded the “World Chili Championship” in Terlingua, Texas in 1967. They decided that beans in Texas Chili would not be tolerated and was outlawed from competition. Thousands of Chili Heads trek to Big Bend Country the first weekend in November. Tolbert died on January 10, 1984.
