Texas First U.S. Senator Dies

Thomas Jefferson Rusk died on July 29, 1857. Rusk was a signor of the Texas

Declaration of Independence at Washington-on-the-Brazos on March 2, 1836. He served as the Secretary of War during the Texas Revolution and with Sam Houston led the Texas Army to victory at San Jacinto. He was elected the first U.S. Senator of Texas after statehood. He and fellow Texas Senator Sam Houston helped settle the Texas Border Dispute of 1850. You can read about it in my award-winning book Sheriff of Starr County, Book V of the Westward Sagas Series by David A. Bowles.
