Leroy T. Kelso was born in Mississippi in 1847 and his family arrived in Texas in 1850.
In 1873, the Comanches were raiding in the Hill Country around Pack Saddle Mountain and Round Mountain. Leroy joined a posse and the Frontier Battalion of the Texas Rangers serving from 1874 to 1875 under Captain Dan Roberts. During one of their pursuits, Leroy was shot in the leg by an Indian rifle ball. As a result, he lived the remainder of this life without a calf muscle in his left leg. Years later, his son, Sidney Kelso, states Leroy once returned home with a war bonnet and beads from the Indian Wars. He died March 18, 1903, at the age of 56 and is buried in Fitzhugh Cemetery.
