Death of Austin’s First Daughter

On January 2, 1900, Elnora Van Cleve-Brown died at her home near the
confluence of the Pedernales and Colorado Rivers in Travis County, Texas.
Elnora was the first child to be born in the new town of Austin. Her parents,
Lorenzo Van Cleve and Margaret Smith, were the third couple to be issued
a marriage license in 1840. Elnora was born April 14, 1841, in a small cabin
on Pecan Street (Sixth) two blocks west of Congress Ave., next door to
